De plantage van onze voorouders / The plantation of our ancestors

This presentation was possible in collaboration with Oorzaken festival.
The author will be present

In the 8-part podcast The Plantation Of Our Ancestors, Maartje Duin delves into traces of slavery in her family tree.

She discovers that an ancestor of hers used to own part of the sugar plantation Tout Lui Faut in Suriname, then a colony of the Netherlands.
Soon she meets Peggy Bouva, one of the descendants of the enslaved. Together they do archival research, interview their family members and visit the remains of the plantation.
This leads to all sorts of questions: whose story is this to tell? What are the effects of slavery on current Dutch society?

Maartje Duin is an award-winning independent journalist and podcast producer based in Amsterdam. She uses audio to transform critical social issues such as loneliness, decolonization and dementia into intimate, poetic stories. In ‘The Plantation of our Ancestors’, which she made in collaboration with Peggy Bouva, she delves into traces of slavery that connect their family trees. This podcast attracted an audience of nearly a million listeners, in both The Netherlands and Suriname. It earned wide critical acclaim and won several prizes. Peggy and Maartje are now working on a second season.
