Silencio para rescatar

by Abraham Chavelas

On September 19th, 2017, an earthquake of 7.1 degrees hit Mexico City, on the anniversary of 1985 catastrophic earthquake. Like 3 decades ago, the population turned to the streets to help those affected, putting evidence your courage and solidarity. This sound reports from the scene, documenting what happened in one of the collapsed buildings, rod hills and rubble. It records the effort of companions and fellow soundmen, sound artists, sound designers, musicians, friends and strangers who formed the Sound Brigade, who - equipped with microphones and portable recorders - supported rescue actions by listening and detecting (among the rubble ) possible signs of life. Acting in different spots in the city during the days after the incident, as well as young people, women, children and entire families, joined wills and stood firm until the last minute of hope.

Abraham Chavelas  (Acapulco, Messico, 1979) is a sound artist and cultural manager. He has been coordinator and producer of artistic and cultural events since 1999: music festivals, exhibitions, performances, etc. His pieces of sound art have been activated live and exhibited in places like Bargehouse / Oxo Tower in London, The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York, Bosque Sonoro, Casa del Lago, Laboratorio Arte Alameda, University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) Mexico City, among others.

The Upsidedown (Il Sottosopra)

by Gianluca Stazi and Giuseppe Casu

Silvestro has worked in the mine since he was 23 years old – now he’s 67. Manlio, at 40, left teaching to go and work in the mine, but to know himself and this new world, had to take on its most infamous job – the time-keeper. He’s now 88. The paths of these two men, different but parallel, meet in 1992 when they barricade themselves into the San Giovanni mine for months – laying explosives across the opening, preventing its closure and the slow desertification of the territory at that time. Years later, after the mines are closed and the desertification advances, Manlio and Silvestro revisit the ghosts of their past.

Cratere

by Hanna Hartman

Cratere was originally commissioned by the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation and Deutschland Radio Berlin.
"Partially based on recordings of the Italian volcano Etna, the 27-minute Cratere evolves methodically through passages of cavernous exhalations and soft wind howls. At one moment, the annoying buzz of a fly appears, followed by soft crinkles that gradually build into loud clatter and rumbles. While Cratere is the slightly less harrowing of the two pieces, it too delivers its share of unsettling moments. At the 20-minute mark, its sounds suggest a subterranean torture chamber more than an outdoor volcano setting, with exhalations resembling the psychotic groans of a serial killer. The piece rises to its most aggressive levels during its final moments as seething rattles and rustlings commingle loudly." (textura.org)
